For the Timed Phrase activities above:
Skip the “Yes/No” page.
Begin on the first page of phrases.
Let the student practice reading the phrases out loud. You can help if needed.
Then, time the student for 1 minute and see how many phrases they can read.
Record the number of phrases the student read in one minute. Then, in the next session, have the student try to beat their previous score. You can make it a fun challenge!
You can continue using the same level phrases until the student can read them all in one minute. You may move the student up to the next level if they are getting most of the phrases within a minute and have been stuck at the same level for a long time.
For the Phrase Chunking activity, take turns with the student, reading each sailboat line by line (the student reads one sailboat, you read the next one, back and forth until all have been read). When it’s your turn to read, follow the words with your cursor so the student can follow along silently. Once someone has finished reading a whole sailboat, reread the last line together before moving on to the next one. When you get to the passage at the end, have the student read the passage to you, take turns reading it, or read it together. This activity can be used multiple times. To add a challenge, time how long it takes for you and the student to finish all the sailboats. Then, try to beat your time in the next session.
For the Phrase Building activity, take turns with the student, reading each section line by line (the student reads one section, you read the next one, back and forth until all have been read). When it’s your turn to read, follow the words with your cursor so the student can follow along silently. Once someone has finished reading a whole section, reread the last line together before moving on to the next one. To add a challenge, time how long it takes for you and the student to finish all the sections. Then, try to beat your time in the next session.
